On a recent shopping trip to Dollar Tree, I discovered these beautiful medallions in their home decor section. They had two shapes, circle and square, and three different colors, white, black, and dark gray. Even though they are stunning on their own, I had a few ideas come to mind to transform them from ordinary to extraordinary!
First Project
For the first project, I am using one of the white round medallions.

Remove the beaded twine tassel from the back, using a staple puller. These are a life saver when removing heavy duty staples. You can find them in my Amazon Store, if your interested in purchasing one.

To create a beautiful aged look, I recommend Waverly’s Antique Wax. It is easy to use with gorgeous results. You can find this product at Wal-Mart, I also have it listed in my Amazon Store.

Apply a generous amount with a small paint brush. Make sure to get into all of the groves and details of the medallion.

As soon as you have covered the entire piece with the antique wax, immediately take a clean paper towel to wipe the excess wax off. The wax will remain in the grooves and details leaving the medallion with a gorgeous aged look.

Using a small wood finial, which can be found at most craft stores, like Hobby Lobby. Apply the antique wax using the same method as you did on the medallion.

Wait several hours to allow both pieces to dry, then apply a permanent adhesive to attach the finial to the top of the medallion. I am using E6000 glue. It provides a strong hold.

This fits perfectly on top of one of Dollar Tree’s glass bubble bowls.

What a versatile home decor piece. You can add artificial florals, greenery, candy, or what ever you like.

Second Project
For this project, we are using another white round medallion. Remove the beaded twine tassel from the back.

Paint the medallion the color of your choice. I chose Celery Chalk Paint. I wanted some of the white to show through, so I didn’t apply a full coat of coverage.

Before the paint dries, I wiped it off with a dry paper towel. This method left a beautiful finish.

Using a piece of wood, cut it to 4″. This is a wood piece you can find at Dollar Tree, or you could use a scrap piece of wood.

You will also need a wooden dowel. Using a pair of miter shears, I originally cut the dowel to 5″.

I chose to apply antique wax to both pieces, using the same method of applying with a brush and then blending it with a dry paper towel.

Using a drill bit the same size as the dowel, drill a hole in the center of the wood block. You don’t want to drill all the way through, only enough to be able to sit the dowel into.

Since the medallion is made of MDF, carefully drill a hole in the bottom, try not to drill all the way through.

Because the medallion is not heavy, I used hot glue to place the dowel into the wood block. But you could use a permanent glue like E6000. I decided to cut the dowel a little shorter than the original 5″, but you can make your piece as tall or short as you like.

Finally you can glue the medallion to the top of the dowel.

Here is the finished product, what do you think?

Third Project
For this project, I am using three of the square white medallions and a sign from Dollar Tree. I removed the tassels from the medallions and the hanger from the sign. I wanted to be able to use the sign both vertically and horizontally.

Paint the center of the sign the color of your choice. I applied a coat of antique wax to the center and painted the wood trim white.

Attach the medallions to the sign using E6000, or any permanent glue.

This is how it turned out. Do you like it better vertically or horizontally?
